Leestown Named a ‘Kentucky School to Watch’

Leestown Middle School has been tapped as a “Kentucky School to Watch,” a prestigious designation that recognizes exceptional middle schools for their academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, strong organizational structures, and commitment to meeting the needs of all students. Led by Principal Joe Gibson, Leestown will be saluted at a National Schools to Watch conference June 26-28 in Washington, D.C.

Notably, Leestown is the first honoree from Fayette County Public Schools in the 20-year history of the Kentucky Schools to Watch program. It will become a model for other middle schools in the Commonwealth, with Leestown staff potentially participating in a Schools to Watch cohort, mentoring other principals, and hosting special guests.

This recognition is based on rigorous criteria, including a school’s commitment to fostering academic growth, social-emotional development, and a positive school culture. Leestown was cited for its dedication to creating a collaborative environment where students and staff work together to build strong, meaningful relationships. The school’s emphasis on high academic standards, personalized learning, and innovative programs also contributed to this significant achievement.
